The Technology Behind Better Putting
A deep dive into how The Speed Machine works — and why it's different from anything else on the market.

Hint: It's not what you think — and it's completely fixable.
It's Not Your Line. It's Your Speed.
80% of three-putts come from poor distance control — not misreading break. You're practicing aim when you should be practicing speed.
"Feel" Is Unreliable
Your feel changes with weather, fatigue, pressure, and mood. Tour pros don't rely on feel for distance — they rely on precision.
You Can't Practice What Matters
Putting mats teach you to hit a hole 6 feet away. When's the last time you practiced a 35-footer? That's where strokes are actually lost.
What if there was a way to practice any putt length — and actually measure your improvement?
Why Traditional Practice Doesn't Work
Most putting practice is ineffective. Here's why.
Every golfer knows putting matters. It's 40% of your score. Yet most golfers spend less than 10% of their practice time on it.
Why? Because traditional putting practice is boring, inconvenient, and ineffective. Rolling balls at a hole on a mat doesn't teach you anything about distance control. You're just grooving a 6-foot stroke that rarely matters on the course.
The real skill — leaving a 40-footer within tap-in range — requires something you can't practice on a standard mat: the ability to control speed with precision.
Precision Speed Training in Any Space
The Speed Machine solves the putting practice problem with three innovations.
Accurate Speed Measurement
An integrated sensor measures your ball speed in real-time, displaying the exact MPH to one decimal place. You'll know instantly whether you hit 6.5 MPH or 7.2 MPH, and that precision builds reliable muscle memory.
Automatic Ball Return
The device uses a gravity-powered return channel that delivers the ball back to your feet. No batteries, no noise, no interruption. You can hit 100 putts in the time it used to take to hit 30.
Tour-Calibrated Surface
The putting surface is calibrated to run at 10-14 on the stimpmeter — the same speed range as real golf course greens. Practice transfers directly to the course.
Three Modes for Complete Training
From foundational speed work to pressure testing.
Speed Mode
Build Your Speed Library
In Speed Mode, every putt displays your ball speed in MPH immediately after contact. This is your foundational training mode. Hit putts at target speeds (5 MPH, 6 MPH, 7 MPH) and build a "library" of speeds your body can reproduce on command.
Why it matters: Once you can reliably hit any speed from 4-12 MPH, you have the building blocks for any putt on the course.
Distance Mode
Translate Speed to Feet
Distance Mode converts your ball speed into actual distance, adjustable for different green speeds. Set the stimp to match your home course and learn which speeds correspond to which distances.
The conversion logic: Speed Mode tells you "7.5 MPH" → Distance Mode tells you "7.5 MPH = 28 feet at stimp 11" → Now you know: 28-foot putt = 7.5 MPH
Combine Mode
Test Under Pressure
Combine Mode turns practice into a scored challenge. The device gives you a target speed, you execute, and you're scored on accuracy. Complete 10 putts and get a total score.
Why it matters: Knowing you can hit 7 MPH in casual practice is different from hitting it when there's a score on the line. Combine Mode builds pressure resilience.
Why Speed-Based Training Works
Backed by motor learning research.
Discrete Motor Programs
When you practice hitting a specific speed repeatedly, your brain creates what motor learning researchers call a "discrete motor program" — a stored movement pattern that can be accessed on demand. This is different from vague "feel," which changes based on conditions. A motor program is reliable.
Cognitive Load Reduction
Standing over a putt, most golfers are processing 5-7 variables: distance, slope, break, speed, stroke path, face angle, tempo. This overwhelms working memory and degrades performance. By converting distance control into a single number, The Speed Machine reduces cognitive load to one variable.
Transfer to Performance
The critical question: does practice transfer to the course? Research on motor learning shows that transfer is highest when practice conditions match performance conditions. Because The Speed Machine uses a tour-calibrated surface and trains the exact skill you need, the transfer is direct.
"The goal isn't to be good at The Speed Machine. The goal is to be good at putting on the course. Everything about this device is designed for transfer."
